Property building in Great Southern Hotel Sydney
I have been staying at the Great Southern Hotel, when I am in Sydney, for the last 3-4 years, after they renovated it and upgraded the bathrooms and rooms. It is a classic old hotel with heaps of charm, so don't expect the decor to be too modern. The price is very good for Sydney CBD. Very friendly staff and 24 hour desk. It is so well located. Right near Chinatown, Paddy's Market and short walk to Darling Harbour. The Light rail is right out the front on George Street, and it’s a 5 minute walk to Central Railway station with a direct line to the airport. No parking though, except at parking garages which are expensive. Much better suited for those using public transport. The pub has great food, delicious and generous serving at a great price with a different blackboard special each day. I will be staying there again.

We traveled from Ohio. We were in Australia for 30 days. Quickly we figured out the transit system and made our way around like a couple of locals. We could not believe how cheaply we traveled around. We could catch the tram to everywhere. The tram was right outside the GSH. PERFECT location. We were pleasantly surprised and impressed by this hotel. It was a perfect temperature, a perfect bed and the bathroom was perfect, too. It was very safe and quiet. We enjoyed the room, the restaurant, the perfect location and more. Bonus with a safe in the room. We were surprised the hotel allowed smoking. We could barely smell it when we walked down the hallway on the second floor. Barely! Kareena and Sujan helped us print items we needed for our cruise. We were very grateful.

The rooms are a good size for a hotel in the heart of the city. Shower with large shower head. The beds are comfortable (although a little soft for me ) apart from air conditioning, a fan above the bed as well. Room we had was at the back, so very quiet. There is also a lift for each section and the lift for the back took us out to entrance to China town. The front lifts were near reception and a walk across George street to the light rail. Such a great location. Walk to the Capitol theatre and so many fabulous restaurants. Light rail can take you to the fish markets for a great seafood meal. The other direction takes you into the heart of the CBD and on to Circular Quay.

Excellent location – very close to all the forms of public transport and to a wide variety of dining options (especially in China Town and Thai Town). We didn't find that part of the CBD to be particularly charming, but it was very easy to get from there to places that are. The room was clean, pleasant and comfortable. We loved the architecture of the building and the vintage fixtures, especially the wood panelling and the vintage radio and telephone in the reception area.

The location is excellent, close to the rail station and several malls and restaurants, and within easy walking distance of Darling Harbour. The staff are helpful and courteous, check-in no problem. The room itself is very spacious and well-equipped, with plenty of electrical power points. Wi-fi is good. The air-conditioning is effective, if a bit slow to cool down the room after entering it as it switches off when you leave.
