Property building in Great Southern Hotel Sydney
I have been staying at the Great Southern Hotel, when I am in Sydney, for the last 3-4 years, after they renovated it and upgraded the bathrooms and rooms. It is a classic old hotel with heaps of charm, so don't expect the decor to be too modern. The price is very good for Sydney CBD. Very friendly staff and 24 hour desk. It is so well located. Right near Chinatown, Paddy's Market and short walk to Darling Harbour. The Light rail is right out the front on George Street, and it’s a 5 minute walk to Central Railway station with a direct line to the airport. No parking though, except at parking garages which are expensive. Much better suited for those using public transport. The pub has great food, delicious and generous serving at a great price with a different blackboard special each day. I will be staying there again.

The location is exceptional, and the price is great value. We ate in the bistro one night and the meal was a great size. Very pleased I was able to reserve a parking spot the morning of my arrival ($45/night) - I took a small car as was warned that the parks were narrow and the height limited to 1.8m. I think you could get cheaper rates down the road, but I enjoyed not having to pull my luggage along the street, so I'm happy to pay slightly extra for that convenience. Staff were very helpful and friendly - both bistro/bar staff and reception staff. I had a room overlooking George Street and was amazed how quiet it was - I couldn't hear the street noise (but people walking through the hotel corridor were sometimes noisy).

The hotel's location was perfect for my needs - 3 minute walk to Central Station, and light rail stop a stone's throw away, giving me very easy access to all three areas I wanted/needed to visit - the CBD and Circular Quay, plus the Randwick terminus at the other end of the line. My room was relatively basic but clean and quiet (apart from a rather loud guest in the adjoining room). The air con was easily adjusted to suit. All staff were helpful and friendly. Breakfast and in house dining were reasonably priced and with a good selection to choose from (other than only tinned fruit at breakfast). Overall good value for money. I will book again on my next trip to Sydney.

It's an old building but very well kept. Good clean room and good bathroom. We were lucky to get a room at the back so it was very quiet. The breakfast was excellent at $9 for a continental breakfast of choice 4 juices, and 4 fruit, 2 cereals, 2 yoghurt, 3 type of bread, 5 different toast toppings, tea and coffee and 2 different milks. All for $9. Absolute excellent value. You could have all that plus the hot breakfast eggs, bacon, baked beans, etc etc for just $17. Then the tram was just outside, the bus just up the road, the railway very nearby. What's not to like.

Great value for money! The staff were beautiful and made my stay very comfortable. The variety of food in the breakfast was impressive. The room was very clean and the bed comfortable. Thank you for the little conveniences in the bathroom and tea/ coffee/ milk supplies. The room was compact and comfortable and I had a good night’s sleep. I loved the atmosphere of The Great Southern with the framed photos of social history on the walls. Well done Great Southern, I truly enjoyed my night.
